BEHAVIOURAL CONSULTANCY

Introduction

Katie provides an equine behavioural consultancy service nationwide combining the latest in behavioural science with lifelong equine experience. Katie aims to provide a service whereby horse people can call upon her when they are experiencing problems with their relationship with their horses or their horse is showing behaviour that they do not understand. Katie has a sympathetic, realistic approach and will work positively with the owner and the horse involved therefore, achieving a successful outcome. Katie respects the confidentiality of all concerned and follows a strict professional code of conduct at all times.

Katie works by veterinary referral and feels that is important as part of a diagnostic procedure to rule out a learnt misbehaviour and get to the cause of the problem. This saves a lot of time and money in the long run and often means that a horse is on the road to recovery much sooner and can be referred back to a vet, physiotherapist etc if signs of pain and tension are found so that this can be investigated further and treated.

Once a case has been referred

Once a case has been referred Katie will usually conduct a phone interview followed by a visit to the horse and owner whereby an in depth history of the horses lifestyle, behavioural problem and the owner is taken. Katie will then conduct a training program that the owner can use either by themselves or with Katie's support so that the horse / owner relationship can return to how it should be. Katie uses a holistic approach and believes that every horse is different; therefore no one cure fixes all! Some behavioural problems can be solved with simple changes to management, handling and husbandry, however a lot of behavioural problems take time and effort to be solved and owners have got to be prepared to put some work in to follow training programmes in order to be successful.

ABOUT KATIE...

Background

Katie has spent the majority of her life with horses and has a great interest in all animals. Katie originally developed her love of horses when starting to learn to ride at the age of 8 years old. Since then things have never been the same and horses have become a lifelong passion. At the age of 10 Katie started to spend a lot of time at her local riding school helping out and gaining as much experience as possible.

Whilst studying and since graduating, Katie has worked at Bubbenhall Bridge Equestrian Centre as 'Head Girl' and has gained valuable experience in running a yard, managing horses and teaching people of all ages and stages in riding and stable management. At Bubbenhall Bridge welfare is a priority and Katie has been lucky enough to have had lots of experience in rehabilitating horses that have had an unfortunate start in life.

Katie has been inspired by the many horses and people that she has worked with and especially enjoys teaching people how to care for the animals in a correct manner.

Katie has ridden throughout her life and particularly enjoys dressage. Katie is the proud owner of Duchess (Horse) and Wilfred (Dog) both of which were rescue cases.

Career

At the age of 16 Katie started training part time for her BHS exams and had achieved her BHSPTC and Intermediate stable manager's qualifications by the age of 21. Alongside these qualifications Katie studied full time to achieve a BA (Hons) degree at Warwickshire College in Equine and Business Management.

Her passion, led Katie to apply to train with Dr Debbie Marsden (One of the world's leading experts in Equine Behaviour) and at the age of 26 Katie achieved her equine behaviour qualification and is on the UK Register of Equine Behavioural Consultants. Since then Katie has developed her own equine behavioural consultancy practice, 'KJM Equine' and this will enable her to help others understand the behaviour of horses and most importantly should help horses lead a better life, with less welfare problems occurring due to a lack of understanding.

Katie also holds an open college certificate in canine psychology and is a member of the National U.K Therapists Register, an Equine Specific first aid certificate and a child protection certificate. Katie is on the B.H.S Register of Instructors and is also a riding and road safety trainer. Katie is fully insured to teach and provide behavioural consultations.

Courses & Lectures

Would you like to arrange an Equine Behaviour / management talk or course for a group of like minded people?
Courses and lectures can be arranged as day or evening courses tailored to an adult or child audience and can be on a behavioural subject such as 'body language' or a management subject such as 'caring for horses at grass'. All courses and lectures are bespoke and are written and delivered with the target audience in mind. Katie can also offer training for BHS exams and the BHS Horse Owners Certificate. Katie can organise talks / lectures / courses etc at your livery yard / riding school and / or at a local venue such as a local pub. These courses / lectures can be great fundraisers and an interesting way of meeting new people and discussing equine related topics. Katie is also able to offer bespoke behaviour courses to equine colleges / pony clubs etc and these can be excellent feeders for future courses.
